Description:

Pretty small. Only saw one little grouping growing at the base of a tree near a creek. March 28th.

I've actually been thinking that this is possibly the bract of a hepatica and all the sepals have just fallen away. I'm not 100% sure, of course, but that is what I'm leaning towards.
My first thought was Trillium. But never seen one this small and thick.
