Field Notes

Description:

Large brown larva, size of the finger with a row of black spots on sides and black horn-like organ on the lower end of the body. In regards to a scene shown in pics, I have no idea what was going on there: we found this caterpillar unmoving, with this green "thing" seemingly attached to its bottom.. When touched, the catterpîlar started moving and writhing violently. And it is no clear if the traces of green slime on the floor are caterpillar's doing (these are known to emitting, if disturbed, an irritating greenish liquid) or something pouring out of that "thing"...

Habitat:

Mediterranean; observed in a coastal village on Adriatic,
