Field Notes

Description:

A beautiful and brightly colored caterpillar feeding on the stamen of a yellow flowering vine. It was about 2 cm long when stretched out. It's coloring gave it very effective camouflage protection. From the side the primary coloring was with orange-red triangles (pictures 1,3,4 & 5), but from the dorsal view, the primary coloring was with green rectangles (pictures 2 & 6). Almost like 2 different caterpillars. The head and thorax were striped. Family Geometridae.

Habitat:

Semi-rural residential area, San Cristobal de Las Casas, Chiapas, Mexico, 2,200 meters.
