Field Notes

Description:

A fresh one and a decaying one growing alongside one another. They undergo quite a transformation in a short amount of time (deliquescence), especially if they are picked or damaged. The young ones such as shown in the first two photos are shaggy white oval-shaped mushrooms, and the older ones are black and appear to just be a dark wet rag hanging off a stalk.

Habitat:

Growing out of horse dung in a grassy area at Payne's Prairie. This species has extensive range but is uncommon.
