White Winged Scoter

A stocky duck with a thick neck and a heavy head with a sloping forehead and a stout bill. Males have a knob at the base of the bill. The wings are rather broad. The tail is fairly long and may be held upward out of the water.Adult males are silken black overall with large white patches in the wings (fully visible in flight and often partly visible at rest). They have a comma-shaped white mark around and behind the eye. Black feathers extend onto the bill, and the tip of the bill is orange. Males’ feet are bright orange-red. Juveniles and females also have the large white wing patches but are otherwise dark brown with a paler belly. They have 2 smudgy white patches on the face, and their bills are dark.
