Description:
Adult-sized bird was foraging along the outer reef; took flight. Hard to photograph, but ID was easy.
Habitat:
Coral atoll in remote Oceania. Islet is uninhabited.
Notes:
Local name is Kivi. We see individuals all year round, even though the entire global population is supposed to nest in Alaska; they are known to use Pacific islands during the Boreal winter. Seriously Nationally Endangered.
