Field Notes

Description:

Also known as wasp moths, C. teuthras is a beautiful species. It has clear wings as its name suggests with black and rusty-red veining. The thorax is also rusty-red with the abdomen being black with bright metallic blue spots running down each side. The antennae are long with feathering along the inner edge.

Habitat:

Found in a friends garden in the foot hills along with many other species.

Notes:

Having done some research into the whole Cosmosoma family, there are several species that look very similar but given this ones location and general identification characteristics I believe this is correct but if anyone has another idea, please share with me.

That's a beauty. Wonderful spotting, Rob.
Thank you for the comment Rach. My friend in Costa Rica put on his moth light at night. In the morning it was like finding a jewel box with most of the surrounding foliage covered with a plethora of brightly coloured species. Quite amazing!
Incredible colouration on this wasp moth, not sure how I missed it before!
Thank you Bayucca, appreciate the confirmation.
Yes, it is Teuthras. The other one would be Cingulatum, which looks slightly different.
