Description:
This is flowering perennial herbaceous plant belonging to family Orchidaceae. Members of this species are terrestrial orchids, buds surviving the winter in underground bulbs or tubers. The plant itself consists of a visible leaf base, and the stem bearing inflorescence, or spike. The orchid reached some 50 to 60cm in height, with some 15-20cm of spike. The spike was not very dense, and regrouped some 20 flowers, each some 2.5cm in length, and pink in color. Flowers have visible spurs, not extremely long and standing erect - which, in French, was the reason to dub them "male orchids" - Orchis mâle.
Habitat:
Observed end of May both in shady areas and completely open areas on alpine pastures in Jura Natural reserve (Col de Faucille).
Notes:
This was one of our first tries in "going to Orchids", learning about and collecting some of photos of members of this beautiful family... So, my son and I, we had a lot of difficulties identifying our spoils - please feel free to correct us...
