Field Notes

Description:

Large Tarantula Wasp, 4 cm long. This one is completely black with no metallic coloring to the body. The wings are very bright orange, almost red and the antennae are black at the base and orange-yellow for most of their length. Family Pompilidae.

Habitat:

Came to an ultraviolet light, Finca Argovia, Ruta de Café, Soconusco area of Southern Chiapas, about 1 hour from Tapachula.

Notes:

This species is different from the one spotted in the mountainous center of the State of Chiapas, which is strongly metallic blue over the entire body and with all dark antennae.
