Asian Ladybug
Harmonia axyridis
28.5553, -82.3879
Field Notes
Description:
The Multi-colored Asian Ladybug Beetle is very common and, as its English name suggests, shows a great deal of intra-species variation, not simply in color but in size of spots. The pronotum of the succinea colour forms of Harmonia axyridis has white markings that typically define an "M"-shaped black area, as seen on a beetle resting head-upwards (or "W"-shaped if it is head looking down.)
Habitat:
They often congregate in sunlit areas because of the heat available, This beetle has been also found to be attracted to dark screening material for its warmth. This specimen was observed on a wildflower in an open field in the direct sun near a lake.
Notes:
Possibly female.
