Field Notes

Description:

Monarch butterflies from the winter reserve of "El Rosario" in Michoacan, Mexico. One of the most amazing experiences I have ever lived.

Habitat:

Fir-pine forest. Spending the winter here, waiting for spring to return to the United States and Canada in one of the great migrations of the animal kindom.

Notes:

This year's report says it is one of the lowest number recorded of monarch butterflies to arrive to their winter grounds. It is very sad news.

I have always wanted to see that migration!!! :) In documentaries it looks so amazing! :))) Great pictures! :)
Thank you ReikoS for the link very interesting and sad info.
I saw an article about monarch population has declined due to extreme weather and changes in farming. Here is the article in New York Times. http://www.nytimes.com/2013/03/14/science/earth/monarch-migration-plunges-to-lowest-level-in-decades.html?_r=0
