Field Notes

Description:

The bass is a green-olive color all over with black spots forming a vertical stripe down the length of the body. I believe the sunfish was either a green sunfish or a red-breasted sunfish, but the bass got it fair and square so we let him keep it instead of trying to ID the sunfish.

Habitat:

The bass is native to North America in freshwater, but has been introduced all over the world as it is a popular sport fish.

Notes:

We have fyke nets out trying to catch turtles to get blood for DNA samples, and of course we caught many fish in the process. While sorting out the fish, we found this guy with the sunfish hanging half way out of its mouth. We snapped a few pictures then set him back in the water to finish his meal.
