Field Notes

Description:

grainy brown segemented larva about an inch long; the back (pic 1) has 2 black holes with little finger-like projections and the front end (pic 2) has what looks like ar tiny round mouth

Habitat:

lots of them were dug up in a wet soil in our garden; urban schoolyard

Notes:

larva are called "leatherjackets"; this is one of the largest groups of flies, including over 15,000 species and subspecies in 525 genera and subgenera so dont' really know which this is; adults look like mosquito with long stilt legs
