small red eggs and black and red insects

Habitat:

spotted on the globe thistle (Echinops sp.) in my desert garden

Notes:

eggs first spotted March 31, hatched Apr 3

Thanks for the input, Hannah. I've no idea what color the ticks are around here. Mmmm...
Too fat, though, I think. Maybe a mimic? Or maybe just a coincidence if you don't have ticks with that colouration where you are.
I'm probably imagining things, but those look a lot like ticks...
