Field Notes

Description:

This narrow deciduous azalea bears fragrant, funnel-shaped, white, pink, or deep rose flowers. It grows to 15 feet tall and 5 to 6 feet wide. Mid-green leaves are densely hairy beneath. This picture shows the flower buds in early spring.

Habitat:

Native to Texas, Tennessee, and from North Carolina to north Florida. This one was photographed near a small creek at the edge of a deciduous forest at Silver Bluff Audubon Center near Jackson (Aiken County), SC.

Notes:

It's also called Pinxter Azalea, Florida Pinxter, Hoary Azalea, Piedmont Azalea, and Wild Azalea.
