Field Notes

Description:

A hard red inflorescence (the top will be yellow as it grows and ages), composed of bracts curling upwards which hold rain water. The flowers are tiny and within the bracts. It grows from the roots. The 3rd picture shows the leaves, which can reach 6 feet in height. There are also several dry "maracas" on the ground.

Habitat:

River Ravine of the Corazon de Fortin, Fortin de Las Flores.

Notes:

It is also called Ginger Shampoo and "Micophone". The water that collects inside the bracts is perfumed by the flowers and is supposedly also repellent to mosquitos. It originated in Asia but is now cultivated in many tropical countries (and green houses) for it's unusual and long-lasting inflorescences.
