Field Notes

Description:

Small, approx 3mm long, black head and thorax, translucent red abdomen.

Habitat:

Nesting in bamboo stakes in open forest and heath at the top of a slope

Notes:

Commonly known as a Reed Bee, I'm pretty sure it's an Exoneura species, my best guess is E. bicolor.

Communal, multiple individuals interacting around the entrances of their various nests, though specific groups seem to be associated with specific nest stakes.
