Description:

Fawn.

Habitat:

The path to Ramboda Falls in Sri Lanka is through a hotel. You can see the path leading to the falls (and the falls) in the background in the first photo. We heard a very loud crying sound and this young man came UP the path having rescued an apparently abandoned baby deer. The hotel staff categorically told him to take back the baby animal and release it where he had found it; at the bottom of the path, near the falls. The young man was worried but was told that very often the presence of tourists spooks the mother deer but they always return to take back the fawn. The fawn was returned immediately to the place where it was found. I asked about local predators and was told there are jackals but no larger animals such as leopards.
I hope the baby was reunited with the mother deer. From the reaction of the hotel staff I felt they have faced similar situations before.

Notes:

It had a really LOUD cry!
