Field Notes

Description:

Black and white Woodpecker seen in Naples Florida

Habitat:

Wooded area/backyard in a gated community. They prefer pecking around our huge Oak trees. They stay for a few hours and then I don't see them until they returned a few months later. I see a male and female (not sure which is which 😎)

Notes:

Thanks ;)

Species ID Suggestions

Hairy Woodpecker

Picoides villosus

Downy Woodpecker

Picoides pubescens

The best way is the length of the bill. If the bill is almost as long as the width of the head then it is a Hairy. If it is shorter almost half than it is a Downy
hmmmm one vote for Hairy and one vote for Downy :)

Males have a red patch on the back of the head and females don't.
I am think more like Downy as I don't see any reports of Hairy in your region.
