Description:
Spotted this Coast Range Fence Lizard with a very blue belly sunning on a rock while I was hiking on Ring Mountain, CA.
Habitat:
Ring Mountain Preserve/Open Space. The western fence lizard occupies a variety of habitats. It is found in grassland, broken chaparral, sagebrush, woodland, coniferous forest, and farmland, and occupies elevations from sea level to 10,800 ft.
Notes:
Sceloporus occidentalis bocourtii is a subspecies of the Western fence lizard. This taxon, S.o. bocourtii, is found in the state of California, from Sonoma County south to Santa Barbara County.[1] This subspecies is in the family Phrynosomatidae, North American spiny lizards. An alternative name for this subspecies is Coast Range fence lizard. The subspecific name, bocourtii, is in honor of French herpetologist Marie Firmin Bocourt.
