Field Notes

Description:

an emergent species in the northern USA, Penstemon digitalis is an attratctive wildflower native to the south. it has white flowers which superficially resemble foxglove, (in my opinion they bear a stronger resemblance to Catalpa tree flowers) but they are unrelated. it is also identified by its opposite perfoliate leaves

Notes:

this specimen was found in a dry field in late summer and this plant is beginning to show some fall color. foliage of Penstemon digitalis is normally green.
