Field Notes

Description:

Boomslang is a venomous snake of the family Colubridae and is one of the few colubrid species that is dangerous to humans. In average, this slender snake grows to about 1.5 meters in length. The coloration is variable. Head is distinct from the neck and has a particular, typical shape. It has a very large eyes with round pupils.

Habitat:

It occurs in savannas throughout sub-Saharan Africa; and it is a diurnal and almost exclusively arboreal snake. It is very reclusive, fleeing anything larger that its prey. When hunting, it lies in wait in a bush or tree for chameleons and birds; the forepart of the body often extends motionless into the air.

Notes:

In one moment, my younger son was very interested in learning about African snakes; but my wife wasn't really too keen to trying to look for these beautiful animals in nature... So, as a sort of compromise, I found a great place with great team in Kinshasa (where we lived at the time) to learn from them. And it was really a great experience; we , my son and I, learned a lot in a dozen of visits.
So if you are around Kinshasa, the place is called "Le Jardin de Serpents" and their FB page is https://www.facebook.com/Les-Serpents-du-Congo, for amateurs...
