Horn-eyed Ghost Crab, Horned Ghost Crab
Ocypode ceratophthalma
22.2124, -159.541
Field Notes
Description:
This no-longer-living Horn-eyed Ghost Crab was washed up on the beach on Kauai, missing one front claw and a leg or two, but its eyes were so interesting I wanted to record it. It was small, the body shell being only a couple inches across, but the horned eyes were the most interesting, about 3/4" long, the the marking on the top rear of the shell is also diagnostic. They're not often seen because they are nocturnal, and move swiftly -- up to 2 meters/second.
Habitat:
They live on sandy beaches, digging a deep burrow at the high water mark.
