Southern Twayblade Orchid
Neottia bifolia
30.8907, -84.2918
Field Notes
Description:
Very tiny orchid, so small I had to use my finger for reference. It can be found along the East Coast from Canada to the Gulf Coast of FL. It has a purple-green stem with two opposite leaves. The flower ranges from reddish purple to green. The only remains of the flower is the distinctively elongated and forked labellum with lobes that taper into points.
Habitat:
The Southern Twayblade Orchid relies on wetland, bogs, fens, and moist woods.
Notes:
The great folks at Wolf Creek Trout Lilly Preserve near Cairo, GA do a great job maintaining this land for the public. The land is protected for important species as this Southern Twayblade Orchid, Trout Lilies, and Spotted Trillium, to name a few wildflowers.
