thanks zoomanallen for the ID and the links.
Here are some useful photos. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Zalophus_californianus_01.JPG (not the same species but in the same genus) http://www.geol.umd.edu/~jmerck/nature/animals/htmls/sealion1.html#next23 ( the 3rd to last picture is a skull)
Looking at that skull, and the long bone on the left, I doubt it is a dolphin, and definitely not a bird. It looks like a carnivore and looking at photos I think it is a sea lion.
Oh, someone was really hungry ;)
Thanks for adding this to the Galapagos Mission, Pamsai! It's definitely not a Pelican, though. The elongated skull plus huge ribs and shoulderblades make me think it's a dolphin, but I'm a bit puzzled. I guess you found it close to the sea? - I'm not a definitive expert, though, and will send it to somebody who will know!
Sorry Emily, I added this to that mission twice... must have lost it when it would only save as a draft! Hope it stays this time...
Please consider adding this spotting to the Identifying Animals Through Osteology Mission! http://www.projectnoah.org/missions/8475425
