Wikipedia confirms they are North America's smallest and most widely distributed bear species. They are omnivores.

Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge. Washington Ditch - same location as deer and a small mink-like mammals were seen 15 minutes earlier. Last year, I saw a trio of turkeys here - dating...

Notes:

The bear looked at me, and sprinted across the dirt road into the woods. About 10 minutes later, a second bear crossed in the same location. ...I see glimpses of black bear fairly frequently at the Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge. The refuge is said to have 300-400 black bear. Unlike several of the black bear in Shenandoah, the dismal swamp's bear run at the sight of humans.
