Field Notes

Description:

From spine tip to spine tip, this urchin was about 4." The spines are of two lengths -- the long ones more than an inch, the short ones a little more than a quarter inch. The short ones are venomous, and if they break off in you they'll cause a lot of pain.

Habitat:

This specimen washed up on the beach and was not alive, although in perfect condition. It was probably dislodged from the nearby reef by heavy surf.
