Field Notes

Description:

Slimy light brown mushrooms at the bottom of a drainage path between two ridges in a dense mixed hardwood forest (under Virginia pines). A sticky white to cream colored veil is still in tact. Pale yellow (buttery colored) ellipsoid pores are present. No bruising occurs when cut. Spore print is a burnt yellow brown (difficult to get a print). Some small dotting on the top of the stalk (beneath the veil) is present.

This is a first-time spotting on Project Noah.

Habitat:

At the bottom of a drainage path between two ridges in a dense mixed hardwood forest (under pitch pines). Very damp soil covered in pine needles and leaves.

Notes:

Suillus salmonicolor is a mycorrhizal fungus; it has a symbiotic relationship with the roots of some pines (in this case, pitch pine).
