Field Notes

Description:

Formicidae; Formicinae; Polyrhachis saevissima argentea Mayr, 1862. When I spotted this ant, this morning, I knew that something was unusual in the way it was moving, but did not realise, until I viewed my photos on my computer that it was moulting.
This ssp. is listed as present here in Philippines which is recorded as the Type Locality in https://www.antwiki.org/wiki/Polyrhachis_saevissima_argentea#Distributi…

Habitat:

I spotted this ant in our front garden. It was crawling around on the leaves of a Grapefruit Tree (Citrus maxima) known here in Philippines as Suha.

Notes:

This tiny creature, all dressed up in his metallic colouring and spiny exoskeleton looks beautiful and scary at the same time. It makes me think of a medieval knight all rigged out in his suit of armour and ready for battle.
