Field Notes
Description:
AMUR Cherry
Younger tree with smooth rusty colored bark. Leaning from wind but being held up by rods.
Habitat:
In open location but also has two neighboring species. There are ponds on both east and west sides of the Cherry tree. Amur Cherry is in full sun which is good in more northern regions. There has been freezing nights which does not harm it.
Notes:
The Amur Cherry shown is very small compared to other trees of the same species. It had very little foliage remaining and did not produce much leaves in season. A branch has been broken off leaving the branch half damaged. All leaves are yellow due to fall conditions and the weakness of the tree. Rods have been put in place to center the tree. The tree looks as though it has been struggling to establish firm roots. Continue to have rods so that in strong winds so that it cannot be damaged further. Prune back broken branches in late winter to prevent damage from a hard frost but also encourage growth in the fall. Amur Cherries are sensitive to the amount of water and well-drained soil. The base of tree seemed to collect more water than the other tree on the northern side that is in very good condition. Lowering the amount of water applied and making sure water is not draining to the base of the plant could benefit the plant. Adjusting the landscape a little for drainage and making sure that the surrounding ponds are not leaking on the Amur Cherry tree. However, on another note it should not be pest related due to having two of the same species close by with no such issues as seen on this particular Amur Cherry. Though the southern Amur cherry, beside the weak one is not doing as well as the northern positioned Amur Cherry tree.
