Ground Spider
Hemicloea sp.
-37.9002, 145.31
Field Notes
Description:
An absolutely flat spider about 13 mm long. The abdomen was pale with a dark median stripe and the cephalothorax was a deep reddish-brown and leathery.
The dark chelicerae were large and pointing downwards. Palps were long, ending in clubs.
Legs had a few stiff bristles but were mostly smooth.
Habitat:
Spotted in a suburban house
Notes:
Because it was so flat, I assumed that this spider had been squashed at first but it moved fast when prodded.
This genus was initially included in Gnaphosidae family but as it shared very many features with those in Trochanteriidae, it was moved to the latter family in 2018.
These spiders hunt at night scuttling across the ground and during day they hide intheir silken webs.
Family: Trochanteriidae.
https://lifeunseen.smugmug.com/Arachnids/Spiders-order-Araneae/Gnaphosi…
