Field Notes

Description:

The last 4 pictures of the series were captured the night after shooting the first 2 pictures, only 50 cm away. I suppose they are the same specie or even more, the same individual (because I found the exoskeleton of the spider in the web, which can be a sign that it molted). I think they are Latrodectus, but I can not find the specie.

Habitat:

Dry forest

Notes:

After long discussion with some colleagues, the spider was identified as Latrodectus geometricus.

Species ID Suggestions

Black Widow Spider

Latrodectus mactans

Thanks John, I checked all the known Latrodectus for South America, and none of the species listed is similar to that one (Except probably for L. antheratus). I will need to take more pictures of the spider.
Certainly a Latrodectus (some form of black widow). I am not sure that L. mactans extends as far south as Ecuador, so it might be a different species. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Latrodectus
