Crested Cardinal
Paroaria coronata
22.2124, -159.541
Field Notes
Description:
This Red-crested Cardinal, found in shrubbery near the beach in Kauai, isn't actually a cardinal although it looks very much like one, although considerably smaller. There is some confusion as to whether it is a tanager or a bunting. Introduced from South America, it isn't native to Hawaii
Habitat:
Its habitat in South America is subtropical or tropical dry shrubland and heavily degraded former forest, but it seems to have adapted nicely to the tropical moist conditions of Kauai.
