Field Notes

Description:

A large terrestrial tortoise native to the southeastern United States. This one was an adult and clearly concerned by our proximity... but not concerned enough to stop eating :)

Habitat:

The tortoise makes large burrows in the ground by digging into sandy substrates with its front legs. They tend to prefer longleaf pine ecosystems with minimal canopy cover and sandy soils, but they can also live in flatwoods, coastal dunes, xeric sandhills, pine/hardwood forests and grasslands/pastures.
