Field Notes

Description:

This medium-sized raptor perched on a tree and rather patiently modeled for me. It adopted a one-legged posture, "rete mirabile," to prevent heat loss, as it was somewhat chilly out. B. lineatus can be found in all seasons in Florida.

Habitat:

Observed next to the marsh in Crystal River Preserve State Park, an estuarine area inhabited by otters, sandhill cranes and other wading birds, and many types of fish.

Notes:

I'm unsure of the subspecies (but B. l. alleni is in range). I saw this hawk 2 years ago, to the day!

Thanks for your comment, Tukup. I agree! You’re fortunate to be surrounded by nature, birds of prey and all.
I love the majesty of birds of prey, probably even more than the beauty of other birds. Fortunately, I don't have to choose between the two :-) Thanks Mauna. Nice series.
