Red-Shouldered Hawk
Buteo lineatus
28.9472, -82.6276
Field Notes
Description:
This medium-sized raptor perched on a tree and rather patiently modeled for me. It adopted a one-legged posture, "rete mirabile," to prevent heat loss, as it was somewhat chilly out. B. lineatus can be found in all seasons in Florida.
Habitat:
Observed next to the marsh in Crystal River Preserve State Park, an estuarine area inhabited by otters, sandhill cranes and other wading birds, and many types of fish.
Notes:
I'm unsure of the subspecies (but B. l. alleni is in range). I saw this hawk 2 years ago, to the day!
