Field Gromwell
Buglossoides arvensis
40.6365, 23.0042
Field Notes
Description:
Short (15-30 cm.) hairy herb with tiny white flowers.
Habitat:
Rocky meadow in Seih-Sou, the suburban forest of Thessaloniki (Greece).
Notes:
Synonym: Lithospermum arvense
A proprietary version of refined Buglossoides oil (trademark: Ahiflower oil) has been developed horticulturally without genetic modification to have the highest omega-3 stearidonic acid (SDA; c18:4n-3) content from a commercially available plant source (17-21%). A natural product of the metabolism of alpha-Linolenic acid (ALA; c18:3n-3) in mammals, dietary SDA bypasses an inefficient rate limiting step in the elongation and synthesis of ALA to eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA; c20:5n-3) commonly found in fish and krill oils. A recently concluded human clinical trial showed that refined Buglossoides oil is safe and increases tissue long-chain n-3 fatty acid content significantly more than flax (Linum usitatissimum) seed oil, a common plant-derived dietary oil containing only n-3 ALA.
