Spiked Sida
Sida hackettiana (syn. Sida subspicata)
-27.7357, 152.709
Field Notes
Description:
A native Australian herbaceous plant of the genus Sida, and there are two almost identical possibilities: Sida hackettiana, aka "spiked sida", and
Sida hackettiana ssp., aka "corrugated sida". Sida belongs to the family Malvaceae, which also includes the hibiscus. The beautiful yellow flowers are so tiny, probably only 5-6 mm in diameter. The third photo shows how each of the stems branch out from a central taproot, and although it grows as a herb, it has the potential of attaining the dimensions of a small shrub about 1+ metre tall. It's also nice to know this isn't a weed. An excellent reference... http://www.canbr.gov.au/cpbr/cd-keys/RFK7/key/RFK7/Media/Html/entities/…
Habitat:
Spotted at Purga Nature Reserve, Ipswich SEQ. Surrounding area cleared farmland, this region is freshening up with rain after a prolonged drought. This is usually a wetland area that is periodically waterlogged during wet periods. https://www.ipswich.qld.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0015/26430/Purga-… According to Ipswich Council, this small reserve constitutes "the largest protected area of endangered Swamp Tea-tree forest in the world."
Notes:
There are two Sida species plants documented as occurring in the Ipswich local area: Sida hackettiana... https://apps.des.qld.gov.au/species-search/details/?id=22197 Sida hackettiana ssp... https://apps.des.qld.gov.au/species-search/details/?id=22198
