Green Mantisfly
Zeugomantispa minuta
20.59, -100.4
Field Notes
Description:
Small insect of about 2cm in length. Base colour is green, with a pale/yellow stripe running down from behind the head to the tip of the abdomen; fringing that stripe are some darker, brown markings; the colourful eyes are outline by a red stripe on top of the head. Adult Mantisflies have raptorial front legs, much like those of Mantids (hence their name), used to catch prey. This consists mainly of other insects. The larvae, however, parasitise insect or spider eggs.
Habitat:
Found among plants in the centre of Querétaro, Mexico.
Notes:
This is a species with a wide distribution, having been reported from the USA to Peru. http://www.americaninsects.net/n/zeugomantispa-minuta.html
