Field Notes

Description:

Common snapping turtles are large turtle with sharp beaks and ridged tails. Their shells are usually tan, dark brown or even black.

Habitat:

Common snapping turtles prefer wet places like lakes, ponds and rivers. They also like wet sandy areas so they can bury themselves in the sand and hide. I found this snapping turtle on the side of the road near a swampy area while I was out running.
