Field Notes

Description:

Early spring wildflower found in deciduous woodlands of the Eastern US. I find them more on slopes of hills.

Habitat:

Forest floors usually with lots of humus, but I've seen it growing happily on slopes with exposed soils. You will only see this in woodlands.

Notes:

Seeds have a small fruit attached which ants find attractive and bring underground to their nest, and giving the seeds a place to germinate.
