Apple Snail eggs
Pomacea canaliculata
22.2221, -159.579
Field Notes
Description:
These apple snail eggs are large, maybe 3/16" across, an a brilliant fuschia pink. Apple snails are an invasive species which does a lot of damage to the ecosystems in Kauai. They also eat taro plants (a staple crop in Kauai) and when eaten for food by humans can transmit flukes and rat lungworm, which can kill you. Not recommended for eating.
Habitat:
These snail eggs were attached to plants at the edge of a backyard pond on the island of Kauai, on the northern shore.
Notes:
I think bullfrogs (also an invasive species on Kauai) eats them, but apparently not fast enough...
