Description:

Native to the Himalayas, the Kahili Ginger is a serious invasive species in certain areas of the world. It is listed as a weed of concern on conservation land in New Zealand, Hawaii and the Azores.

This specimen was spotted in Mata-Jardim José do Canto Park on São Miguel Island, Azores, Portugal.

The Kahili Ginger can be found all over São Miguel Island.

Habitat:

Usually cultivated as an ornamental plant in gardens and parks. It prefers a warm tropical climate, although it can thrive in sub-tropical and temperate regions by tolerating light, infrequent frosts.

Notes:

It has been recognized as one of "The World's 100 Worst Invasive Alien Species".
