Field Notes

Description:

Pale peach cap, white toothed underside. The stipes seemed to have little bumps.There were half a dozen of these scattered around this spot. In the third photo you can see a couple young ones coming up near the base of a more mature one. These mushrooms stain your hands brownish orange if you handle them. Hydnum washingtonianum or Hydnum olympicum.

Habitat:

Under some young Sitka Spruce trees among some thick moss. They were growing about 20 yards inland of the beach. Remote area in Izhut Bay, Afognak Island.
