Field Notes

Description:

Argiope aemula (Walckenaer, 1841). This female Oval St. Andrew's Cross Spider has created a web decoration known as a Four-armed Discontinuous Cruciate Stabilimentum. I would add that this web decoration is "very scrappy and untidy". This is a very unscientific way to describe web decorations because, even if my rather derogatory description is appropriate for this web decoration, as I see it right now, the same spider may well replace it with a perfect decoration overnight. My main reason for using such expressions (usually restricted to my little personal notebook) is that it seems to help me to look more carefully at the spider, its web, and its decoration. I guess that we all have our own little foibles and, sometimes, it's better to admit to them.

Habitat:

Spotted in a rice field.
