Field Notes

Description:

Very delicate fungi growing out of a cardboard tag marking a tomato seedling or the surrounding potting mix. About 1" tall. The pot has been in a humid greenhouse inside my home at approx 75 degrees F.

I'd say they are a Coprinellus species... It's hard to tell from the photos, but were the caps covered in fine white powder-like scales? A bit like this but perhaps less apparent: http://www.commanster.eu/commanster/Mushrooms/Agaric/SuAgaric/Coprinellus.xanthothrix.jpg The powder is the remnants of a universal veil. If the veil is present it's a Coprinellus species, if absent - Parasola as Vlad suggested. Without a microscope it would be very hard to identify to species for sure, but a lot of mushrooms with an appearance like this get labelled as Parasola plicatilis.

Thanks, Mayra! They are lovely. Unfortunately they started drooping almost immediately after I took them out of the greenhouse. I'm hoping someone will be able to help identify them. How random!
