Bald Eagle immature
Haliaeetus leucocephalus
31.1087, -97.4971
Field Notes
Description:
Immature birds have mostly dark heads and tails; their brown wings and bodies are mottled with white in varying amounts. Young birds attain adult plumage in about five years.
Habitat:
Belton Lake
Notes:
A cold front had blown in during the morning, dropping the temperature more than 30 degrees in the space of just a few hours. A fine mist and strong north wind was still blowing across the lake when this young bird appeared. It was trying to fly into it, but not making much progress.
It gave up for awhile and landed on one of the snags to rest.
