This particular bird was spotted in the City Park in Bishop, CA, a high-desert community in the Eastern Sierras. The park's pond which is usually inhabited primarily by ducks appeared to have been overtaken mainly by seagulls on this day.

This bird was in a pond in the Bishop city park far, far from the coast. However, he was with a large population of seagulls, which might explain something??

Livan is correct about the range of the Great Cormorant. Brandt's Cormorant is another large cormorant, but it is only in marine environments on the coast. The Double-crested Cormorant is large, with a thick bill, and has conspicuous pale facial skin, usually orange. A juvenile has uniformly pale upper breast.

Great Cormorant not found in California, in North America, its range is the Atlantic coast from the Carolina's to Canada. I believe this is an immature double-crested.
