Field Notes

Description:

big intimidating wasp, black abdomen with distinctive yellow stripes, reddish-brownish wings, burrows in ground, supposedly harmless to humans but deadly to cicadas. Will paralyze a cicada, bring it into the ground nest, and have its larvae feed off of it. brutal!

Habitat:

nests in the ground in grassy areas of Prospect Park, Brooklyn

Notes:

intimidating though it is not aggressive towards people
