Field Notes

Description:

Lycoperdon of some sort (thank you Gary!). On a dry grassland path of Floyd Bennett Field in Brooklyn. Has a little bit of a base in that it does taper down to a point. Not a very sharp point, rather blunt. The warts flake off as you can see, the body is plushy, and the spores are brown. The picture is not apparent, but some of the spines meet at their tips. Bovistella radicata? Using the key for Lycoperdon & allies in Mushrooms Demystified by David Arora. A few of these around. Becomes very powdery in a few days, brown spores coming out of the top.

Habitat:

open dry grassland path of Floyd Bennett Field in Brooklyn.
