desert cottontail
Sylvilagus audubonii
37.9341, -119.055
Field Notes
Description:
Has larger ears than other cottontail species, probably an adaptation for thermoregulation in warm climates.
Habitat:
In addition to the Great Basin, I have seen them in grasslands of the Sacramento Valley and inner Coast Range in the San Francisco Bay region.
Notes:
I have observed this species taking refuge in California ground squirrel burrows.
